As the seeds of the poison oak plant are distributed widely by birds, you may discover it on your property from time to time. There are a number herbicides generally available to deal with this pest. Consult a professional for advice and always remember to follow directions closely.

Pulling up the weeds by hand or by machine is less effective unless you can be sure that you can pull up the roots as well. Dress appropriately and use rubber or barrier-proof gloves. Remember to shower and wash clothing and footwear afterwards.

Do not, under any circumstances, burn poison oak. The oily sap may adhere to the ashes or cinders and, if inhaled, will cause severe lung irritation. Instead, bag the plants and take them to a disposal site.
